| In
order to place your personal web page on the ATPRS.net you need to move it to our server. You can do this by
using an FTP (file transfer protocol) client. Some common FTP programs are
the following... |
Cute FTP,
WS-FTP, or
Bullet FTP
If you need help with configuring an ftp program email
us at support@atprs.net with
information about your Operating System and your Web Browser. |
- Make sure the filename for your webpage is
called... index.htm
- Make a connection to ATPRS.net, just as if
you were going to browse the web.
- Using an FTP program connect to the host "atprs.net"
using your own username and password to login.
- After the connection is made you will be in your
own home directory, you will need to make a directory called public_html.
The make directory command in the ftp client may be abbreviated "mkdir".
After creating the directory you will need to change into it. This can
usually be done by double- clicking on the public_html directory.
- Now that you are in your public_html directory,
move your webpage and any files that it points to (i.e. any graphics files
such as .gif, or .jpg, .htm, etc...) over to this directory.
- After you have made sure that the webpage is named
"index.htm" and that all the appropriate files have been completely
copied, the page will be updated automatically and you will be able to
view it by going to to http://www.atprs.net/~yourusername with your web
browser (i.e. - if your
username was 'mark', your web pages's URL would be
http://www.atprs.net/~mark
- At this point you should be able to view your
webpage. If you have any problems doing so, do not hesitate to contact us
either by email
support@atprs.net or by phone

- Make sure that the main file of your main web page
is called 'index.html' or 'index.htm' (Case DOES matter).
- Make sure that if you use long filenames, you look
in your home directory after transferring all of the files. Many times,
when Windows transfers files with long file names (longer than 8
characters) it shortens the name of the file and inserts a tilde (~) to
show the filename should be longer. For instance if your webpage HTML code
points to a graphic file named "MYpic.jpg" If the file posted to the
server is actually named "mypic.jpg" your web browser will not display the
graphic. You can rename files on the FTP server using your FTP
client.
- To make posting your webpage as easy as possible
ATPRS.net suggests that all file names you use follow the DOS 8.3 naming
convention. In other words make sure all of your HTML files and graphics
files are no longer than 8 characters long, and that they have a 3 digit
extension such as .htm, .gif, or .jpg.

Also note: your public_html directory is open to the
world to read. Please do not store files in that directory you do not want
others to see or have access to. |
